Heinemann, Gustav (1899–1976)

German politician and lawyer. From 1946 he was lord mayor of Essen, Germany, until, in 1949, he became minister of the Interior (1949–50). He was a founder member of the Christian Democratic party, but left in 1952, largely because of disagreement with Konrad Adenauer's foreign policy, and joined the Social Democrats in 1957. He was minister of justice in Kurt Kiesinger's coalition cabinet 1966–69. He was president of the Federal Republic 1969–74. Heinemann was born in Schwelm, Westphalia, Germany.
