Heinsius, Anthony (1641–1720)

Dutch statesman and confidential agent of William of Orange. In 1688 he was grand pensionary of Holland and guided Dutch politics until his death. He was an implacable enemy of France and, after William's death, was chiefly responsible for the alliance of 1702 against Louis XIV. Heinsius was born in Delft, Netherlands. He studied law at Leiden University.
