uncertainty principle |
Also found in: Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.05 sec. |
uncertainty principleIn quantum mechanics, the principle that it is impossible to know with unlimited accuracy the position and momentum of a particle. The principle arises because in order to locate a particle exactly, an observer must bounce light (in the form of a photon) off the particle, which must alter its position in an unpredictable way. It was established by German physicist Werner Heisenberg, and gave a theoretical limit to the precision with which a particle's momentum and position can be measured simultaneously: the more accurately the one is determined, the more uncertainty there is in the other. | Darling clearly explains the complex fundamentals of that discipline, such as the duality of light as both wave and particle, the effects of measurement on particle states, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, and the notion of entanglement. Werner Carl Heisenberg's uncertainty principle states that there has to be an interaction between the target and the object being shot at it. Comfort with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, Schrodinger's simultaneously dead and living cat, and Jeans' cosmos that's more like a thought than a mechanism seem to have engendered increased comfort with "God" as an awesome set of abstract operating principles rather than a humanoid mythic image. |
