Helensburgh

Holiday resort and residential town in Argyll and Bute unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the Firth of Clyde at the mouth of Gare Loch, 40 km/25 mi northwest of Glasgow; population (2001) 16,800. With neighbouring Rhu, it is a centre for dinghy sailing.

Founded in the 18th century, the town contains many fine villas built by wealthy Glaswegians. The most outstanding example is Hill House, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and built in 1902-3.

Helensburgh was reputedly the birthplace of steam navigation in Europe. Henry Bell (1767-1830), hotelier and builder of the steamship Comet, ran the first European commercial steamline in 1812; it went to Glasgow.
