Hell Gate

Channel between Manhattan Island, Long Island, and the mainland of New York State, which links New York's East River with Long Island Sound. It received its name from early Dutch navigators, who found its waters treacherous; there was a whirlpool here, and wrecks were frequent. It is today bridged by the Hell Gate Bridge (railway) and the Triborough Bridge (road).
