Hellendaal, Pieter (1721–1799)

Dutch violinist, composer, and organist. He wrote violin sonatas in the style of the Italian baroque composers, and was a successful solo violinist.

After his family moved to Amsterdam during 1737 he studied with Giuseppe Tartini in Italy. He was active as a composer from 1744, and in Leiden between 1749 and 1751 attempted to establish himself as a musician. After moving to London, England, in 1751 he obtained posts in Oxford and King's Lynn, finally moving to Cambridge in 1762; he was widely respected in East Anglia as a musician and composer.

Works

sonatas for violin and basso continuo, concertos for strings (published Amsterdam, London, and Cambridge), glees, vocal canons and catches (published London and Cambridge), and the cantata Strephon and Myrtilla (about 1785).
