Cape Helles

Headland at the southern end of the Gallipoli peninsula, northwest Turkey (European), near the entrance to the Dardanelles. It was an Allied landing point for the Gallipoli campaigns of World War I.

In an effort to neutralize Turkish batteries controlling the strait, Anglo-French forces were put ashore on the cape with orders to link up with Anzac troops, landing simultaneously 13 km/8 mi to the north at Kabatape beach. In the event, a drifting marker buoy caused the Anzacs to come ashore 2 km/1 mi further north in a heavily defended cove.

The headland is marked by a British naval obelisk.
