helmet shell

Carnivorous mollusc found in tropical seas and the Mediterranean. Helmet shells resemble whelks in appearance, having thick heavy shells with prominent edges. Some species attain considerable size, 10–20 cm/4–8 in.

Classification

Helmet shells are members of the superfamily Tonnacea, subclass Prosobranchia, class Gastropoda, phylum Mollusca.
