Helmholtz resonator| Spherical vessel of metal or glass with an opening and an earpiece on opposite sides, from a harmonic series of 19 such vessels constructed for the German physicist Hermann Helmholtz (1821–1894) as an instrument of acoustic analysis. Placed in the ear, it acts as an acoustic filter, allowing only sounds of a particular pitch to be heard. Helmholtz also used resonators in series with tuning forks as sound sources in pioneering experiments in synthesizing instrumental timbres. |
