Helmstedt

City in Lower Saxony, Germany, 36 km/22 mi east of Brunswick; population (1994) 26,900. Textiles, machinery, soap, and margarine are manufactured, and brown coal (lignite) is mined in the area. Helmstedt dates from the Middle Ages.

Helmstedt grew up around the 9th-century abbey of St Ludgeri, and from the post-Reformation period until Napoleonic times (1576–1810) was a university town. Numerous old churches and houses remain in the city, and there are two Stone Age burial grounds nearby. Before the reunification of Germany in 1990, Helmstedt was one of the principal border crossings into East Germany.
