Helst, Bartholomeus van der

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Helst, Bartholomeus van der (1613–1670)

Dutch portrait painter. His smoothly painted, well-composed works were very successful in his time. The large group Banquet of the Burgher Guard 1648 (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam) has 24 full-length figures.

Helst was born in Haarlem. He was one of the founders of the Amsterdam Painters' Guild. His work was so influential that the two talented painters Ferdinand Bol and Govaert Flinck (1615–1660), for example, abandoned the style of Rembrandt, their teacher, and turned to Helst's more popular style.
