Helwan

Industrial city in northern Egypt, close to the River Nile, 16 km/10 mi southeast of Cairo; population (1991) 328,000. The main industries are steel manufacture, spinning, and weaving. The city has warm sulphur springs.

Meanwhile, at Helwan University, south of Cairo, nearly 2,500 students protested against Israeli attacks in the Palestinian territories and Syria and against the U.
Mohamed Abdel Gawad designed a student centre in Helwan University Campus with some consideration for the environment.
Especially, she adds, since "woman (mar'a) did not go out much in the cities at that time, so she used to find in Helwan some freedom which she did not enjoy in Cairo, and women (nisa') would go there for recreation" (73).
