Hely-Hutchinson, Victor

Hely-Hutchinson, (Christian) Victor (1901–1947)

English pianist and composer. He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, and became a lecturer in music at Cape Town University in 1922. In 1926 he returned to England and joined the staff of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), first in London and then as regional director of music at Birmingham, where he became professor of music at the university in 1934. He resigned in 1944 to take up the appointment of musical director of the BBC.

Works

A Carol Symphony and variations for orchestra; piano quintet, string quartet; choral works; songs, including settings of Edward Lear; film music.
