Hemet

City in Riverside County, southern California, 48 km/30 mi southeast of Riverside, in the San Jacinto Valley; population (1990) 36,100. Incorporated in 1910, it is a market centre for an area in which fruit, olives, walnuts, and potatoes are grown, and also has various light manufactures.

Since 1970 the population of Hemet has trebled as its popularity as an affluent retirement centre has grown. The Ramona Pageant, based on the 1884 Helen Hunt Jackson novel of the same name, has been held here annually since 1923, and is staged in the outdoor Ramona Bowl by residents of Hemet and its sister city San Jacinto. Maze Stone County Park, which lies immediately to the northwest, contains a noted 15,000-year-old petrograph in the shape of a maze.
