My one quibble is that occasionally Westney accents an upbeat gesture--"Carefree" is one example and in "Il Penseroso," his accented eighth note on an offbeat creates a hemiola effect that I do not think was intended by the composer. It is a fast waltz and exploits hemiola rhythm in the middle section. Initially in triple meter (3/4), hemiola is used in the melody with further meter changes from 314 to 214, 414, and 3/2. |
