Henderson, Neville Meyrick

    0.03 sec.

Henderson, Neville Meyrick (1882–1942)

British diplomat. Henderson is principally remembered for his services as ambassador to Germany from 1937 until September 1939 and thus for his close association with Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement. He worked hard to prevent a breach between Britain and Germany, and his book on the subject, Failure of a Mission (1940), is the story of a bitterly disappointed man with a deep sense of personal failure.

He entered the diplomatic service in 1905, and was minister to Egypt (1924–28), France (1928–29) and Yugoslavia (1929–35). He was subsequently ambassador to Argentina and minister to Paraguay (1935–37). His autobiography, The Water under the Bridges, was published in 1945.
