Henderson Field

Airfield established on Guadalcanal island during World War II; originally begun by the Japanese, it was completed by US forces 1942 and named after a US Marine major killed at the Battle of Midway. The Guadalcanal campaign was fought over possession of the airfield, since its position was essential for command of the area around the Solomon Islands.
