Heng Samrin (1934– )

Cambodian politician, national leader 1981–91. A Khmer Rouge commander 1976–78, he became disillusioned with its brutal tactics. He led an unsuccessful coup against Pol Pot in 1978 and established the Kampuchean People's Revolutionary Party (KPRP) in Vietnam, before returning in 1979 to head the new Vietnamese-backed government, becoming KPRP leader in 1981. He was replaced as prime minister by the reformist Hun Sen in 1985 but retained control over the government until 1991 as KPRP leader.
