Hengelo

Town in the province of Overijssel, the Netherlands, 8 km/5 mi northwest of Enschede; population (1996) 8,400. There are large diesel-engine and cotton industries, in addition to dyeing, brewing, and railway engineering. The town centre was severely damaged during World War II.
