Henle, Friedrich Gustav Jakob (1809-1885)

German pathologist and anatomist. His Manual of Rational Pathology (1846-53) emphasized that pathology depended upon scientific study, marking a fundamentally new approach; it was a precursor of modern microbiology. He published his Handbook of Systematic Human Anatomy 1855-71, which contained all that was known of the structure of the human body. His discoveries included the looped portion of the kidney tubule known as Henle's loop. Henle was born at Fürth, Franconia, Germany.
