Henner, Jean Jacques

    0.02 sec.

Henner, Jean Jacques (1832–1905)

French painter. One of the most successful Academy painters of his day, he was noted in particular for his portraits and his sensuous, allegorical nudes.

Born in Bernwiller, Alsace, he was educated under Drolling and Picot in Paris, and in 1858 obtained the Grand Prix de Rome. In Italy he was particularly influenced by the works of Correggio and Giorgione, as in Idyll, or The Fountain 1873. Despite being one of the most celebrated French painters of the time, his reputation declined sharply after his death.
