Henning

Town in Lauderdale County, western Tennessee, 76 km/47 mi northeast of Memphis; population (1990) 800. This community, in the cotton-growing region of the South, was home to Alex Haley, author of the best-selling novel Roots (1976), much of which was set in the vicinity. The bungalow on Haley Street where he was raised by his grandparents is now the Alex Haley House Museum.
