Henry the Navigator (1394–1460)

Though not a navigator himself, Henry was a great patron of navigators and voyages of discovery, and encouraged the development of navigational instruments and cartography.

Portuguese prince, the fourth son of John I. He is credited with setting up a school for navigators in 1419 and under his patronage Portuguese sailors explored and colonized Madeira, the Cape Verde Islands, and the Azores; they sailed down the African coast almost to Sierra Leone.

The Story: Wine has been produced on Madeira since the 15th Century, when Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal was quick to see the advantages of developing Madeira as an island vineyard.
Crowned champion two-year-old at the end of 2007, the Jim Bolgertrained New Approach enjoyed a tremendous year finishing runnerup to Henry the navigator in the English and Irish 2000 Guineas before winning the Vodafone Derby at Epsom.
Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva will on Saturday also present Oliveira with the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, one of Portugal's highest honors.
