Herbert, Wally (1934–2007)

British surveyor and explorer. His first surface crossing by dog sledge of the Arctic Ocean 1968–69, from Alaska to Spitsbergen via the North Pole, was the longest sustained sledging journey (6,000 km/3,800 mi) in polar exploration. He was the first person to reach the geographic North Pole on foot.

During his nearly 50 year career he explored some 36,800 km/23,000 mi of polar area. He was knighted in 2000.
