Herbig, Günther (1931- )

Czech-born German conductor. He studied in Weimar and was assistant to Scherchen and Karajan. He held posts in Erfurt, Weimar, Potsdam, and East Berlin before becoming musical director of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in 1972. He was chief conductor of the East Berlin Symphony Orchestra from 1977, guest conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra 1979-81, and musical director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra 1984-89 and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1989. He was guest conductor of the BBC Philharmonic from 1980. He was well known for his performances of Bruckner.
