Maximian (died AD 310)

Roman emperor 286–305. Diocletian made Maximian, a Pannonian soldier, joint emperor and gave him the western provinces to rule. He was compelled to retire when Diocletian abdicated voluntarily in favour of Constantius I 305.

When his son Maxentius assumed the imperial title 306, Maximian returned to Rome and supported Constantine the Great against Maxentius. However, he failed to depose his son and fled to Gaul. In 307 he led a revolt against Constantine, but was captured in Marseille, where he committed suicide.
