Herkimer County

Administrative district of north-central New York; area 3,667 sq km/1,416 sq mi, population (1990) 65,800. The county extends from the Mohawk Valley in the south to the Adirondack Mountains in the north, and has its seat at Herkimer.

The west-central portion of Herkimer county lies close to the Utica city limits, and has experienced some suburban growth. Along the Mohawk River, which runs east–west across the county, industry has developed in municipal areas such as Frankfort, Ilion, Herkimer, and Mohawk. This river valley is also very fertile, supporting many crops and dairy cattle. The northern part of the county is home to a number of mountain and lake resorts.
