Herman, Jerry

Herman, Jerry (Gerald) (1933– )

US composer and lyricist. His first successful Broadway musical, Milk and Honey (1961), was followed by the Tony Award-winning hits Hello Dolly (1964), Mame (1966), and La Cage aux Folles (1983), the first Broadway musical to portray a homosexual relationship.

Herman was born in New York City. Majoring in drama at the University of Miami, he won the Snark's award for playwriting; his college revue, I Feel Wonderful, had an off Broadway run.
