Hermiston

City in Umatilla County, northeastern Oregon, 45 km/28 mi west-northwest of Pendleton; population (2000) 13,200. It is part of a fertile farming area created by the Umatilla Irrigation Project.

Hermiston is now particularly known for its watermelons and honey. It is also a centre for recreational activity on the Columbia River, 8 km/5 mi to the north. Cold Springs National Wildlife Refuge and Reservoir lie 6 km/4 mi to the east.
