Hermocrates (c. 460–407 BC)

Syracusan politician and general. He played the central part in the Syracusans' defeat of the Athenians in Sicily 413 BC. He later commanded the Syracusan squadron that served with the Spartan fleet at the naval battle of Cynossema 412, but after their defeat at Cyzicus 409, he was dismissed and exiled from Syracuse. Later he fought against Carthage, and was killed while attempting to return to Syracuse.

Hermocrates is one of the speakers in Plato's Timaeus.
