Hermoupoli

Port and capital of Syros Island, Greece, and capital of the Cyclades department; population (2001 est) 13,000. It is the only industrial town in the Cyclades; cotton and Turkish delight are manufactured, and there are ship-repairing yards. It was at one time the chief port of Greece, but declined with the growth of Peiraias in the late 19th century.

It is the seat of an Orthodox archbishop and a Roman Catholic bishop.
