Cortes

Name of the national assemblies of Spain and Portugal.

In Spain there were formerly several Cortes representing various districts, the chief being the Cortes of Castile and that of Aragón, each with its own constitution. During the French invasion under Napoleon Bonaparte a new constitution was framed, known as the Constitution of 1812.
