Herne

Port and city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, in the heart of the Ruhr coalfield, 51 km/32 mi northeast of Düsseldorf; population (1995) 179,900. It is the terminus of the Rhine–Herne Canal. Industries include coalmining, iron and steelmaking, civil engineering, construction, and waste disposal.

The Rhine–Herne Canal was opened in 1914 to offset the locational disadvantage of the central Ruhr area. It is also linked with the Dortmund–Ems Canal.

Herne hosts an Early Music Festival annually in November.
