Guaymas

Seaport on the Pacific coast in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico; population (1995) 134,600. Situated on the Gulf of California, it is 133 km/83 mi south of Hermosillo, with which it is connected by rail. Guaymas is a fishing port with a large fish and shellfish-canning industry. It has a warm winter climate and has developed as a tourist resort.

Guaymas is Mexico's seventh-largest port, and handles coastal trade as well as imports and exports. It services 14% of Mexico's annual fishing take. An annual carnival is held in March/April, and water sports in May attract many visitors. Guaymas has an 18th-century church, San Fernando.
