Herreweghe, Philippe (1947– )

Belgian conductor. In 1969 he founded the Collegium Vocale of Ghent for the performance of early music. He co-founded the Ensemble Vocal La Chapelle Royale in 1977, and has collaborated with Ton Koopman, Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and the Kuijken brothers in such projects as the Towards Bach series in London in 1989. He became conductor of the European Vocal Ensemble that year and led Dido and Aeneas in Brussels in 1992.
