Herrin

City in Williamson County, south-central Illinois, 8 km/5 mi northwest of Marion; population (1990) 10,900. It was a coal mining centre from 1895 until after World War II. Today, manufactures include major appliances, containers, upholstery, and clothing.

Herrin was founded in 1818. In 1922, it was the scene of the ‘Herrin Massacre’, in which striking miners killed more than 20 non-union workers. Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is situated 6 km/4 mi to the south.

AP) -At Frederick Community College's Catoctin Center for Regional Studies, Dean Herrin and others began a research project on the Civil War era.
Herrin spoke to the board, saying that the cornerstones are in place for a contract agreement but that one essential ingredient is still needed for a successful partnership.
The latter's population was about half a million, Herrin estimates; huge for those days but commonplace today.
