Kherson

Port in southern Ukraine, situated on the River Dnieper 140 km/87 mi east of Odessa, and capital of the oblast of the same name; population (2001) 328,400. Its industries include shipbuilding, petroleum refining, and the manufacture of soap and tobacco. Kherson was founded in 1778 by army commander Grigory Potemkin as the first Russian naval base on the Black Sea.
