Herstal

Town in the province of Liège, Belgium, a suburb of the city of Liège, on the River Meuse; population (2001 est) 36,100. Herstal has a small-arms factory, a cannon foundry, and coal-mines, and manufactures iron and steel. It is the reputed birthplace of Pepin the Short and his son Charlemagne.
