Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Herter, Christian (1840–1883)

German-born US furniture maker. He joined half brother Gustav Herter's New York firm, which in 1866 was renamed Herter Brothers. After studying design in Paris, Christian bought out Gustav's share in 1870 and abandoned the firm's historical revival furniture in favour of pieces akin to the English arts-and-crafts style. Clients such as the Vanderbilts and J P Morgan commissioned suites and interiors from him. Herter was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and emigrated to New York c. 1860.
