Herter, Christian Archibald

Herter, Christian Archibald (1895–1967)

US Republican politician and diplomat. From 1943 he was a member of the House of Representatives, and he was governor of Massachusetts 1953–57. He was undersecretary of state 1957–59 and secretary of state 1959–61. His major contribution was to alleviate Soviet pressure on West Berlin.

Herter was born in France, of US parents, and educated at Harvard. He served as assistant secretary of commerce to Herbert Hoover 1919–24, and in 1931 began his party political career as a Republican representative in the Massachusetts legislature. As secretary of state he was the successor to John Foster Dulles.
