Hertford

Hertford

Market town and administrative headquarters of Hertfordshire, southeast England, on the River Lea, about 40 km/25 mi north of London; population (2001) 32,400. Industries include brewing, printing, telecommunications, and plastics manufacturing. Service activities include finance, and research and development for the rubber industry.

Hertford was the site of a Saxon stronghold, and there are remains of a Norman castle, including the Norman mound, parts of the curtain wall of Henry II, and the 15th-century gatehouse. Haileybury College, a co-educational private school, is nearby.
