Hertzka, Emil (1869–1932)

Hungarian-born Austrian music publisher. He studied chemistry at the University of Vienna, and also music. In 1901 he joined Universal Edition, which was founded that year, and became director in 1907, a post he held until his death. He did great service to modern music, publishing the work of such composers as Bartók, Berg, Krenek, Schoenberg, Webern, Weill, and others. He also encouraged many other young composers, such as Kalmus.
