Herz, Das

Opera by Hans Pfitzner (libretto by H Mahner-Mons), composed 1930–31 and first produced in Berlin and Munich, Germany, on 12 November 1931. It was Pfitzner's last opera. It tells how Dr Athanasius attempts the diabolic resuscitation of the Duke's dead son, but the price is his wife's heart. He is condemned for sorcery, but atones.
