Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Hesburgh, Theodore (Martin) (1917– )

US clergyman and university president. An ordained Roman Catholic priest, he became indelibly identified with Notre Dame University, where he was president (1952–87) in a term that secularized and integrated the university and brought the athletic department under administrative control. Hesburgh was a charter member of the Civil Rights Commission (1957–72). He was born in Syracuse, New York.
