Hesse, Eva (1936–1970)

German-born US sculptor. Inspired by a trip to Germany (1964–65), she specialized in organic surrealist images, as in the 1970 piece Untitled (known as Seven Poles). Hesse was born in Hamburg, Germany. She and her family escaped Nazism and emigrated to New York City in 1939. She studied as attended Pratt Institute (1952) and Cooper Union (1952–55). She died of a brain tumour.
