Heston, Charlton (1924- )

US film actor. He often starred in biblical and historical epics; for example, as Moses in The Ten Commandments (1956), and in the title role in Ben Hur (1959, Academy Award). His other film appearances include Touch of Evil (1958), Major Dundee (1965), Earthquake (1974), True Lies (1994), The Planet of the Apes and The Order (both 2001).

He was elected president of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in 1998, having been vice-president in 1997. He was re-elected to an unprecedented fourth three-year term in 2001, and is strongly in favour of gun freedom in the USA.
