Heyse, Paul von (1830–1914)

German author. He excelled as a writer of short stories, enhanced by humour, their rendering of detail, and a graceful style. Das Buch der Freundschaft (1883) is a collection of stories; his Novellen (in three volumes) were published in 1890. He also wrote some novels, plays, and a number of poems. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1910 and was the first German to receive this award.

Among his other works are Thekla (1858), a poem; Die Kinder der Welt (1873); and the dramas Maria von Magdala 1889 and Der Heilige (1902).
