Hickox, Richard

Hickox, Richard (1948–2008)

English conductor. He was an organ scholar at Cambridge and studied at the Royal College of Music in London. He founded the Richard Hickox Singers, giving concerts with a wide range of repertory. He has worked with the City of London Sinfonia and the Northern Sinfonia in Newcastle. In 1983 he became assistant conductor of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and assistant to Abbado at the London Symphony Orchestra (he was made associate conductor in 1985). He was artistic director of the Northern Sinfonia 1982–90, and co-founded the Collegium Musicum in 1990 (giving baroque concerts and recordings). He led performances of Alcina and Poppea at the City of London Festival in 1985 and 1988 (which were also recorded). He conducted Troilus and Cressida at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, and Russalka for the English National Opera Ensemble in 1995. He recorded the Vaughan Williams symphonies with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 1995.
