Hidalgo, Juan (c. 1614-1685)

Spanish composer. He was influential in the introduction of Italian-style operas to Spain, and collaborated with the playwright Pedro Calderón de la Barca in the composition of several operas, including Celos aun del aire matan (1660), the first known Spanish opera.

He was a harpist and harpsichordist in the royal chapel in Madrid, and is said to have invented an instrument called the claviharpa.
