Hidrovía Project

    0.04 sec.

Hidrovía Project

Controversial plan to turn the 3,400 km/2,100 mi Paraguay–Paraná river system into a shipping lane. It would pass through Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. To create a navigable canal the river system would need to be dredged, dammed, and diverted at various stages. In June 1995, the United Nations Environmental Programme called on the governments of the La Plata Basin (see Plata, Rió de la) to halt work on the project until studies on environmental impact had been completed.
